Sharing the Planet

Welcome Back!

It was exciting to get back to school this week and hear about all the fun that was had during Spring Break.  Many changes have been noticed as well, as the trees and flowers have begun to show beautiful buds and flowers!  

Sharing the Planet

This week began our provocations of the last unit of inquiry this year, Sharing the Planet.  This unit will provide an inquiry into the rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things. 

Our Central Idea: 
Conservation of water benefits people and other living things.

Questions to drive our inquiries:

What is conservation?
Why does water have to be conserved?
How does conserving water affect other living things?
How is water contaminated?
How do we clean water?
What can I do to conserve water?

We started our unit off with a fascinating trip to the Baldwin Water Treatment Facility.  We learned that a lot goes into collecting and cleaning our water, and how lucky we are to have such a precious resource right in Cleveland, Lake Erie!

Each class wrote an acoustic water poem to show what we already know about water.  We will write these poems again at the end to see all that we have learned.  












We took water walks around the school as well.  This helped us see all the places we use water at CIS.  Wow, there sure are a lot! We also decided to track our own water use for one day.  We will use this information throughout our unit.

Skyping from South Africa

Mrs. Snyder's class got to enjoy a very exciting visit from Cape Town, South Africa.  We were able to see and talk with our classmate who is there and meet her teacher and new friends.

How We Organize Ourselves

Our Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, kept us really busy over the last 6 weeks.  Our inquires focused on sharing responsibilities to achieve a goal.  We found examples of this everywhere!  Playground activities, stories, inquiry centers, cooking, the list truly goes on and on!

We learn so much with our friends.  We share share our knowledge as communicators and are open-minded listeners!

Everyone's role is important!  We each need to do our part.

Cooking:
We assigned roles to make our snacks.  It made the work go quickly and was a lot of fun!

FAMILY JAM FUN!

The 2nd Annual CIS Family Jam was held last week.  Such a fun time.  We thank everyone for making the day so special and give a big round of applause for our courageous Explorers and teachers who performed.  

Opie's Visit:

Mrs. Traben visited with a special guest, Opie.  Opie is a puppy she resuced and was helping to find it a new home.  Mrs. Traben's  action showed another way we can work to make the world a better place.

Giraffe Love

Kindergarten teachers found a fun way to remind us to speak giraffe.
  

*Ask your knowledgeable Explorer if they can tell you again what it means to speak giraffe.

-The long neck reminds us to stick our neck out for our friends.

-The large heart reminds us to always be caring.
