Wrapping Up Our Who We Are Unit of Inquiry

Can you believe we are almost to day 30 of KINDERGARTEN?  It truly is hard to believe!  We have just concluded our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, as well.  We explored our self identity through the lenses of Form, Connection and Change (Key Concepts).  It has truly been a joy to hear our Explorers reflect on who they are using these terms and making connections to the world around them.

Our studies have led into all our subject areas.  We use this information in reading, writing and math.  We are such hard working students!

We can share about ourselves through our writing:

We also spent a lot time learning how to group information around us.  Sorting is a lot of fun and we love the creativity we could show thinking of the many ways to sort:

NUMBER WALK PROJECTS

Surprise!  2nd Graders came to read to our classes.  They did a wonderful job and we loved hearing them read.

Reading Together

Help!

I’m trying hard to learn to read

But what’s a kid to do.

When there’s a NO and a Go and a SO and a HO

And then there’s a word like TO?

Reading BONE and CONE and LONE and TONE

Can almost be kind of fun,

But I get upset when I have to believe

That D-O-N-E spells DONE!

It’s plain to see that a kid like me

Sure needs a helping hand.

No matter how much I really try

I just don’t understand.

I’m trying hard to learn to read.

Somehow that’s what I’ll do.

But for now if you’ll just read to me

Someday I’ll read to you.

How are we Connected?

We love sharing our Me Bags!!

Our Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, has led us to look carefully into

Creating our Self-portrtraits

what we are like (key concept-form) and we have spent a great deal of our time investigating how we connect to the world around us (key concept-connection).  We have found that we connect to many people in our class, school and community.  We have also found out that we have a lot of connections to the characters in the books we read.  Books are so fun and they teach us so much!

Ask your child what connections they made this week.  We bet their answers will surprise you!

Here is a glimpse into our week:

We are mathematicians too!

One tool our mathematicians use to show numbers in a variety of ways is by using a Rekenrek.  Such thinkers!

Our scientists are always inquiring and investigating!

Who We Are

Our first Unit of Inquiry is underway and it has been a lot of fun!  We are spending our time investigating ourselves through stories and many, many activities.  We have looked into our Form and Connection so far and will be getting into how we have changed very soon.  



When we look at our Form (Key Concept), we are looking into what we are like.  This week we found a lot of different parts that make us what we are like: birthday, girl/boy, age, name, brain, height, the way we communicate...the list truly goes on and on.  We are noticing how we are connected to others as well (Connection is another key concept).  We sure do have a lot in common with our friends and the world around us!

As we stretched our thinking, we have found we are so many things; mathematicians, readers, writers, artists, thinkers, builders, gardeners, scientists...again the list is endless!  Celebrating all that we are and can do is an important part of each of our days.

Our Garden:

A big celebration this week was the planting our our new garden!  We planted all kinds of yummy vegetables and look forward to watching them grow.  Thank you to the Taseff family for donating all the plants and helping us with our gardening adventure.
